Our Favorite Local Stores
(no commercial benefit here -just years of experience)
Grocery - The Blue Marlin is the local island independant grocer. As you might imagine, the food costs are a bit higher because of the proximity. If you cross the bridge (2 miles), you'll find an HEB and a super WalMart. Either one will be competitive and probably save you between 10% and 50% on many items.
Clothing - Isla and Rica are two of our favorites. Say "hi" to Christina, Dainty, Vern and the rest of the crowd. Vern will give you local fishing tips and let you know about island happenings. They stock almost anything you'd need in women's wear including shoes, island wear, sleep wear and good cheer! Check out Dainty's art work while you are there - it is unique and wonderful.
Restaurants - Blackbeards is our #1 island eatery. They serve everything from steaks to fish and the best burgers in Texas. No kidding. Onion rings are homemade and excellent with cream gravy on the side. This is just around the corner so you can walk right over at lunch or dinner. We also like pizza from The Brewery (BBQ Chicken and pesto is excellent) and noticed that the PIzza Hut is especially good and fresh.
Kiting - SPI benefits from wind just about year around. There is no better kite shop than B&S Kites. Whether you want to try a single line, dual line or quad, Bill and Susie are the people to see. I've been doing business with them for years and never had a problem - only good times. Bill will take you out for a free kite lesson - just ask! www.bskites.com
Fishing - For the kids, Jim's pier does a nice job at bay fishing. You'll catch smaller fish in the bay but it is great for a short trip. They also allow you to launch for $5.00 if you have your own boat. It is much friendlier and convenient than some of the other options. Watch the channel and the tides if you are bringing your own boat. When they say the bay is only a few feet deep, they mean it!
